We are so very pleased to announce that New Ravenna has been published in the November issue of Elle Décor! This month’s edition stars legendary fashion and style icon, Ralph Lauren, on the cover, along with a piece summarizing 50 years of his legendary style. So, you can imagine our excitement when we discovered that within, we are the featured artist in an editorial piece about mosaics! This piece includes a full-page photo of our 24-karat-gold glass Egrets mosaic, an in-progress shot of our master mosaicist, Bobby Jones, creating said mosaic, and many additional mentions of New Ravenna!
With a 24-karat-gold background, 15 colors of jewel glass used to create the birds and cherry blossoms, and four grout colors, the “Egrets” mosaic (shown below) highlights the complexity and beauty achieved in a custom mosaic. Elle Decór describes the mosaic art form as “not for the faint of heart – or the empty of pocket,” and goes on to describe the intricacy and therefore the hefty price of custom mosaics (including our Neptune mural with three stallions roaring out of a wave).
Mosaics of this complexity take weeks and weeks to create at New Ravenna, as every little piece is hand cut and meticulously placed to produce the final result. With “Egrets,” the story is much more involved. An incredibly talented New Ravenna team member (and sketch artist by night) was asked to sketch some birds. She came up with this southern twist on a classic oriental scene by using egrets (indicative to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where our factory is located) and magnolia blossoms (a southern staple). Our talented mosaicists then used tiny pieces of hand cut glass to create the mosaic you see today!
